Around Azeroth: Try and love one another

Despite my WoW beginnings on the opening-day PvP server Magtheridon, I'm really enjoying my new life on the roleplaying haven of Moon Guard. And part of the fun is running into completely random RP events, like this Valentine's party observed in Stormwind by Farreby of <Oath Sworn> on Thorium Brotherhood. Sadly, Farreby knows no back story here -- he writes that he merely walked by and took a screenshot of the synchronized dance moves. But why were no gnomes or dwarves invited? Someone call the Committee for Equal Heights!

Do you have any unusual World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We'd love to see it on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wowinsider.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!

Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing -- use alt-Z to remove it. Please, no more sunsets.

Around Azeroth: The circle of death

One of the great joys of being a high level in WoW is when you get to go back and completely decimate enemies that owned you forty levels ago. This is why you often run into bitter level 70s repeatedly killing Mor'Ladim or Sons of Arugal. From what I could gather from his e-mail, Flobot of Turalyon was in a Deadmines group with such a vengeance-minded hunter. The "hunter runner" dragged all the local mobs back to the group, resulting in the carnage you see here. What did the miners ever do to you, unnamed hunter? Oh, right. The repair bills. Sorry about that.

Around Azeroth: A whale of a tale

Fine, fine, orcas aren't actually whales. There's nothing out there that rhymes with orca, so I had to improvise. What are you, a marine biologist? Anyway, Wrath of the Lich King photoblogger Chaotique, of Perenolde's semi-infamous <Sleeper Cartel>, sent us a handful of irregularly-sized photos for Around Azeroth, including this shot of a struggling flying machine creating a smoke trail over a seemingly blissful marine mammal. With all the engineers and their polluting devices heading to Northrend, how long will it be before the air quality equals that of Los Angeles? But I suppose that in a world constantly being threatened by undead hordes and enormous red demons, pollution is the least dire threat.

This image came to us straight from the Wrath of the Lich King beta -- and we'd love to have your beta screenshots, too! Around Azeroth: Abby Normal

Namus of Korialstrasz is back with another cool Wrath of the Lich King beta shot, this time from the road into Zul'Drak. While meandering along the path, Namus ran into this hideous flesh titan, also known as Thrym <The Hope-Ender>. Namus described him as "the size of a Fel Reaver but as sneaky as a Devilsaur", words that can strike fear into any WoW player's heart. Apparently he has 630,000 HP, hits for 7K+ on plate, and is considered the hardest outdoor boss in beta. He also doesn't seem to fall for the old angsty "we belong dead" routine -- that glow by his right foot is the remains of Namus. Ick.

Around Azeroth: I've got style, miles and miles

Dear God. The only thing more terrifying than the knowledge that Astarri has somehow repeatedly dragged a post-Burning Crusade group through the horrors of Molten Core to garner at least two pieces of the Felheart set is the possibility that she only did it to match the garish Sin'dorei scenery. The pimp hat does fit quite well, though one wonders what exactly the Orb of Summoning is for. Is this the beginning of Outland's first red light district?

Caption This: Vote for winners!

It's been one week since we opened our most recent Caption This! contest to entries. We've allowed them to age to perfection over the weekend, and they're now ripe enough for you to pick the winner! Members of the WoW Insider staff have chosen their favorite captions from the bunch, and I've added in some of the highest-rated captions with the comment system. All in all, we ended up with a baker's dozen of quotes. Now you get to decide who goes home with a 60-day game card, a choice of one of seven World of Warcraft action figures as detailed in the original post, or nothing but a deep sense of inadequacy. Just pick the best caption for the above picture. Voting closes tomorrow, Wednesday, September 3, at 11:59 PM EST, and winners will be informed shortly afterward by e-mail.

Remember, entrants must be U.S. or non-Quebec Canadians at least 13 years old. If you'd like to peruse the contest's official rules, they can be found here. Happy voting!

Who is the winner of the August 26 Caption This contest?

Around Azeroth: Putting down roots

Most Trees of Life seem at home in rural environments. Ashenvale, Mulgore, even Zul'Aman -- anywhere with grass, trees, and lots of people begging for Innervate. But Shadowchaser of <Guardians of the Flame> on Proudmoore seems to have evolved to fit into modern urban life. Just chillin' with a beer in the basement of Wildhammer Stronghold, wedged awkwardly into a chair, and waving as his drinking buddies show up. I suspect that anyone Shadowchaser Lifeblooms tonight is going to have a hangover the next morning.

Around Azeroth: The vampire bank

Who knew that Blizzard was getting so strict about guild bank theft? They've even installed security devices. Moonaholic, a member of <Damage> on Anvilmar, has apparently been sucked dry by this rogue vampire guild bank. Luckily she's already undead, so all she'll have to do is find a tailor to stitch up the gaping holes in her neck.

Around Azeroth: The replacement

Hello, sir. I'm afraid that Kil'jaeden is not available to take your summon right now. I'm Nidhogg, his official assistant, and I'm filling in for him today. What do you need? A raid slaughtered? A world devoured? The slow corruption of a government? Wait! Please, don't go! I really need this chance. My wife is expecting and I'm looking for a promotion to a position within the Legion that offers health insurance.

Actually, Nidhogg of Frostmourne-EU snapped this photo after a bugged Kael'thas kill. He noticed that he and his group were able to "fly around as they pleased", so he took the opportunity to sneak into a suddenly non-hostile Sunwell for this pic. Thanks for the screenshot, Nidhogg!

Around Azeroth: Famous last stand

It's never a good sign when there's only one person visible in a boss fight screenshot. It's an even worse sign when you can see a dead tank by the boss's head. Luckily, this is Nef, so there's a good explanation for the absence of players: all the melee DPS is hiding around his flanks, the ranged DPS is shooting at him from behind, and the healers are off somewhere plotting how to kill the rogues on the priest class call. So it's up to the undead warrior and his Thunderfury to hold the fort. (Thanks to Tora of Wen Tzu Enclave on Bloodscalp-EU, who notes that this was actually not a wipe.)

Around Azeroth: The deadliest catch

There hasn't been a lot of information put out about fishing in Wrath of the Lich King. According to El's Anglin', grand master fishing was just introduced in the last couple weeks, and beta testers are still figuring out exactly what's available in the waters. But there's one thing we know for sure -- whatever new tricks and trinkets Blizzard come up with, the path to 450 fishing will involve a lot of hours spent staring at the screen, waiting for a little bobber to go up and down in the water. El's Anglin' puts it at about 1,000 catches from 375-450, or approximately four to five hours. (This is why I never made it to 375.)

Beta testers may have just gotten the ability to fish, but it looks like the NPCs have been working on leveling their skill for a while. Tinuviel of <Soldiers of Fortune> on Antonidas, who writes the Steady Shot hunter blog, sat with some of the local Tuskarr while they reeled in their catches near one of the local turtle boats (which seems to also serve as a fishing vessel.) She then jumped in the water, electrocuting everyone with her shoulderpads.

Hey, amigos. You've only got fourteen and a half more hours to participate in this week's Caption This contest. To participate, leave a caption for the above picture on the original post by 11:59 PM EST tonight!

Eligible winners (U.S. or non-Quebec Canadian residents above 13) will receive a 60-day gamecard for first place, and a choice of one of seven World of Warcraft action figures (see original post for details) goes to the runner-up. Around Azeroth: Halaa, alone

Halaa is like a set of jumper cables. Most of the time, you don't care whether it's there or not -- but when you suddenly need access to it, it's the most important thing you can possibly think of. Borings, from the Dark Iron server, was recently forced to take Halaa alone. While waiting for the final cap, he felt moved to climb up the city's flag pole and proclaim his victory. His voidwalker, Tanggrave, seems to be even more excited. Why is his voidwalker called Tanggrave? According to Borings, "he is after all a big blue grave full of tang." Ah, the joys of Blizzard's random demon name generator. At least it's better than Krakho or Nublok..

Around Azeroth: Udder humiliation

"Look, honey, I'm really happy that you decided to play WoW with me. I wanted us to be able to share the experience of gaming together. And I don't mind that you rolled a blood elf, even though everyone's going to assume that you're a 12-year-old boy. I just ... I'm not going to ride on the zhevra. I don't care how rare it is, I'm not going to be seen on a prettied-up horse. It just isn't tauren of me. It's bad enough that I'm going to be hanging out with a blood elf for fifty-eight levels ..."

"Honey? Oh, don't get mad. Please. See, I'm getting on the zhevra. What? No! Well ... okay. Just one picture. And you have to promise it'll never leave your hands. Are you done now? Good, because I think I broke its pelvis. Can you get on Wowhead and look up veterinarians in Silvermoon City?"

(Thanks to Amradorn of <Foederati> on Aggramar for the pic!)

Around Azeroth: Baby, it's cold outside

Beta tester and frequent submitter Landon has sent us yet another great shot of the Storm Peaks area, which has been temporarily closed to beta testers. This particular shot is of the Thunderfall area, where storm giants and some humanoids (dwarves?) are fighting it out through eternity. The big question here is this: what caused a cold snap so severe that it froze the combatants in motion? An ice mage with too much +damage gear? Reverse spontaneous combustion? Until the zone is unfrozen for more beta testing (ha ha, it's a terrible pun), we won't know for sure. All I know is that I suddenly have a strong desire to reread Thud!
